Triceratops

by  Brad Bromling D.Min.

This month's dinosaur is called Triceratops (try-SER-uh-tops). His name means "three horned face;" from the picture, you can see why! If you look at his mouth, you can see why he is also considered a "parrot beaked" dinosaur. His "beak" was probably very strong and able to bite through thick plant stalks. He grew to be about 30 feet long and weighed about 6 tons. Some think that when he was excited, he could run up to 30 miles an hour.

His neck was protected by a bone collar (called a frill) which was a part of his skull (head bone). This frill served as an armor shield. With his three horns, snapping beak, and armored frill, Triceratops was well protected from meat eating dinosaurs (like Tyrannosaurus).
