What day, month, and year did Noah get on the ark?

Dear Lauren,

The Bible tells us exactly what day, month, and year Noah got on the Ark. In Genesis 7:11 the Bible says: "In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

However, Noah's second month and our second month are not the same. We base our calendar on the moving of the Sun, which means that our second month is February. Noah's calendar was based on the moving of the Moon, which means that his second month was called Ziv (1 Kings 6:1). Ziv in our time would be around April or May.

The year Noah entered the ark can be calculated from Genesis 5. Approximately 1656 years after creation, Noah entered the ark. Therefore on the 17th day of Ziv, 1656 A.A. (After Adam), Noah and his family entered the ark. It is hard to convert this to our modern way of dating, but it would have happened some time in May, around 2348 B.C.
