The Perfect Pearl

by  Sheila Butt

Have you ever noticed someone wearing a beautiful pearl necklace? Maybe your mother or your grandmother has one. The pearls on the necklace are very valuable. They grow inside of oysters below the surface of the sea. The first pearl may have been found by someone who was searching the seaside for food.

Since its discovery, the pearl has been considered to be one of the most beautiful and majestic gems on Earth. In ancient Rome, pearls were considered the most important symbol of a person's wealth and social standing.

Some pearls are worth more than others. If a pearl is yellow, and not round or smooth, it is not perfect. A perfect pearl is worth a great price.

The Bible tells us in Matthew 13:45 that there was a man who was searching for beautiful pearls. He didn't want just any pearls. He only wanted the best ones. While he was searching, he found the pearl of great price. It was the most perfect pearl he had ever seen! He went and sold all that he had and bought it. Why? Because it was the best! After he found the most beautiful pearl, none of his other material possessions mattered to him. The kingdom of God is like that pearl of great price. It is worth all that we have to give.

In Ecclesiastes 3:11 we are told that God has set eternity in our hearts. That means that we are like the man who was searching for the perfect pearl. We will never really be satisfied until we know God and learn about living with Him forever. Then we will have found the most perfect pearl of all!
