Science and Scripture

Many people believe that if a person is interested in science, he or she will not be able to hold a very high opinion of the Bible. That is not really the truth, for many of the world's most famous scientists have had great respect for the Bible.

Blaise Pascal was a French scientist who lived more than three hundred years ago. As a boy, Pascal was very smart. He had taught himself geometry by the time he was 12 years old. He also invented a calculator. He is probably best known, though, for his discovery that liquid in a container carries the same pressure in every direction. This is known as "Pascal's Law," and the principle is very important in the use of machines like hydraulic (high-DRALL-ick) jacks and compressors.

But Pascal was also a devout believer in the Bible. He once wrote that the prophecies of the Old Testament which tell of the coming of Christ ought to convince anyone that Jesus is the Son of God. He also said that apart from the Scriptures we cannot know what is moral (good) conduct.

It is possible to have an interest in science and also to believe the Bible is God's Word.
