Why are There so Many Different Religions?

by  Digger Doug

Dear reader,

That is a very good question, and one that has multiple answers. With thousands of different faiths and be-liefs in the world, we often wonder why so many exist and how they all started. We know that in the beginning of the world, God talked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:8-19). After the Flood (Genesis 6-8), Noah's descendants scattered over the whole Earth (Genesis 10:32). Over the years, as the people multiplied and scattered throughout the Earth, their knowledge of the true God faded as stories and memories became flawed, and they began to invent religions of their own. These manmade religions were based on things that they saw around them, instead of on God. They worshiped idols made of wood, stone, and metal. Some even worshiped things in nature, such as the Sun, Moon, and stars. And as time went on, they completely forgot where they had come from and Who the real God was.

What is interesting is that most religions have similar stories, especially concerning Creation and a great flood. For example, the Babylonians told a story of a man who was warned by one of the Babylonian gods to build a large boat and take many animals with him, because the gods were angry and were going to destroy the Earth with a flood. Doesn't that sound familiar? These similar stories help to show that all religions had the same root—the one true religion of the one true God.
