What Alcohol Does to Your Body

by  Nathaniel Nelson

Do you ever watch the news on T.V., or listen to it on the radio? Maybe you've heard how 100,000 drivers are killed every year because someone involved in the wreck was drunk. Maybe you heard how, in one month, 15,884,195 bottles of beer were produced by alcohol companies, or, in only one half of a year, 151,569,823 bottles were made. Does this seem like a problem to you? Alcohol is a big problem for many people in the U.S. It can have horrible effects on many people who choose to drink it.

There are many things that could happen to a person who drinks alcohol. Alcohol puts extra pressure on the heart, forcing it to beat harder, which can cause a stroke or heart damage. Alcohol also can affect how a person reacts to things around him. Under the influence of alcohol, a person cannot think as clearly or as quickly. He begins to lose self-control, coordination, and the ability to use good judgment. After all of this abuse to the body, that person can even suffer brain damage. Drinking alcohol can cause cancer, liver, and nutrition problems, and bleeding and swelling of the stomach. Drinking alcohol can even harmfully affect an unborn baby inside of a pregnant mother. Sadly, knowing all of the facts about alcohol does not stop many people from drinking, and they suffer more and more harmful things because of their sinful desires.

God wants us never to be drunk with alcohol. King Solomon wrote to his son and said: "Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, those who go in search of mixed wine" (Proverbs 23:29-30). Even King Solomon knew the bad affects that alcohol has on the body. Paul mentioned that we should not be drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). Remember not to follow along with those thousands of people who drink alcohol. Be an example to them, and tell them what it can do to their physical and spiritual health.
