A World Without Wrong

by  Zach Smith

The man ran into the bank, pointed a gun at the lady behind the desk, and shouted, "Give me all your money!" She quickly filled a bag with money and gave it to the man.  He took it-and then shot her! But, he didn't run out of the bank. He didn't jump into a car and drive off. He wasn't even wearing a mask! He walked out slowly, and went about his business. Why didn't the police stop him? Why wasn't he put in prison for robbing the bank and killing the teller?

Imagine a world without right and wrong. People could do whatever they wanted to do-the world would be an absolute mess! If I wanted to rob a bank, that would be just fine. If you decided to murder someone, you could not be arrested for it. There would be no laws, no police , and no courts.

A world without right and wrong is a world doomed to die. Obviously, there must be right and wrong-we could not exist for long without them. But how do we know right from wrong? We have seen that individuals cannot have their own version of right and wrong,  so there must be a right and wrong that is higher  than  man.  It can not come from animals, because they have no sense of right and wrong. It cannot come from rocks and trees, because they cannot tell us what to do. There are rules to tell us what to do, and it is by these rules that everyone lives. These rules tell us that certain things are right and certain things are wrong. And where there are rules, there must be a Ruler.

This issue of Discovery magazine is de voted to understanding right from wrong. In the world today, few people are doing the right thing. Even some religious people have started following Satan to do wrong. We can know right from wrong, and we must do what is right. God has left us a standard of right and wrong, a guidebook to use in knowing what to do the Bible. In this Book, we learn about the One Whom we are to imitate-Jesus, Who said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6).
