Why Worship on Sunday?

by  A.P. Staff

Christians meet on various days of the week to worship God and to study the Bible. In many places, Christians meet on Wednesdays for Bible study, or on other weeknights for special singings or gospel meetings. Christians can also be found worshiping on Sundays. Have you ever wondered why we worship on the first day of the week? Is it tradition? Is it because everyone else is doing it? Or, did God command us to worship on the first day of the week?

There are important reasons why we come together to worship on Sunday. One of them is to take the Lord's Supper. The Bible records in Acts 20:7—"Now upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread…." The first-century Christians came together to break bread (take the Lord's Supper), and we should follow their example by doing the same.

We also know that the early Christians set aside money to give to God on the first day of the week. To the Christians in Corinth Paul wrote: "Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the church of Galatia, so you must do also: on the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come" (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).

Christians gather to worship on Sunday because Christ rose from the grave on the first day of the week. In Matthew 28, Jesus' crucifixion is vividly described, but the cross did not stop Him. He rose from the tomb on the third day after His brutal death. Matthew 28:6 says simply: "He is not here; for He is risen." Because Jesus is no longer dead, but alive, we have the privilege of praising His name on the first day of every week—the day the early Christians came together to worship God, and the day God's people today gather together to glorify His name.
