What is God Like?

What does God look like? That is an interesting question. We think about it often, but this question cannot be answered. The Bible teaches that human beings cannot˙20see God (John 1:18). This is because God, in His "spirit" form, is invisible (Colossians 1:15). He "dwells" in light that is so bright that no earthly being could come close to Him (I Timothy 6:16). That is why we do not try to make images (carvings or pictures) of the true God.

In the time of Old Testament history, men sometimes tried to make images of God, or of their false gods. When they did, the Lord was not pleased with them. Do you remember when the Hebrew people made a golden calf and worshipped it? (see Exodus 32:1-6). They were probably thinking about some of the gods they had seen the Egyptians worshipping when they lived in the land of Egypt.

Even today there are some people who make images of their gods and worship those images.

Let us consider the nature of God for a moment. Of what is God made? Actually, God is not "made" of anything, because God was never "made" at all. He never had a beginning. He has always been God. From everlasting to everlasting, He is God (Psalm 90:2).

The Bible teaches that God is a spirit being (John 4:24). But what is a spirit? We really do not know. We can only get an idea of what a spirit is by learning what a spirit is not. For example, a spirit does not have flesh and bones (Luke 24:39). God, our Heavenly Father, therefore, is not a physical Person. Also, Jesus taught that God does not have flesh and blood (Matthew 16:17). We know, then, that God is not a human being. He is not a man (see Hosea 11:9).

Though we cannot see God, we can see things He has made (such as the stars and Earth). Through these things we can learn much about His power and wisdom (Romans 1:20).
