Let There Be Light

by  Wayne Jackson M.A.

On the first day of the creation week, God said, "Let there be light" (Genesis 1:3). For the very first time light existed. What is light? It is a form of energy that exists in "rays." God once asked Job, an ancient wise man, "Where is the way to the dwelling of light?" (Job 38:19). It is an amazing fact that light does exist in a "way" (a path), and it moves in a straight line. Light travels at the speed of over 186,000 miles per second (670 million miles per hour). It takes the Sun's light more than 8 minutes to come to Earth (the Sun is 93 million miles away).

Everything that God made was "very good" (Genesis 1:31), and that includes light. Light is good because without it we could not see the clouds, the birds, the green grass, or the words on this page. We see objects clearly or dimly depending upon how many light rays fall upon them. Light is good because without it plants could not grow and we would not have good vegetables to eat. Nor would we have meat to eat, for animals must eat plants in order to live. Light is good because it kills many germs which would be harmful to us if they grew as rapidly as they sometimes can in the dark. Doctors are even using light to perform surgery. Have you heard of laser surgery? How thankful we should be that God made light.
