God Will Not Go Away

Throughout the trip, references to God kept popping up all over the Capitol. For instance, as I was walking by the U.S. Department of Agriculture building, I saw an inscription carved into the front of it. When I looked closer, I realized that it was a quote from the Bible. It says: "The husbandman that laboreth must be first partaker of the fruits" (2 Timothy 2:6). The quote is attributed to "Saint Paul."

The National Archives Building houses one of the most famous references to God. In this building, many of the most important historic documents of our country can be viewed. The Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence are all kept in a room of the Archives building called the Rotunda. One of the most well-known of all historic statements is found at the beginning of the Declaration of Independence in a section called the Preamble. It reads: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." In another room, a photograph on the wall has a woman holding up a sign that says "God bless you all."

At the Supreme Court Building, the carved wooden doors that go into the court chamber have a carving of tablets representing the Ten Commandments on them, and a sculpture on the wall of the chamber also has tablets with numbers on them symbolizing the Ten Commandments.

The truth is, just about everywhere you turn in Washington, D.C. there is a reminder that God, the Almighty Creator, is responsible for the good things that this country of ours has received. If our country forgets God and tries to remove Him and His Word from schools, courtrooms, and other places, God will take away our freedoms. If we do not remember God and His laws of justice and righteousness, we will no longer be able to sing "God Bless the U.S.A." Let us all decide to do our part to help our fellow citizens remember that we are supposed to be "One Nation Under God."
