Tall Trees Point to God

by  Wayne Jackson M.A.

What is the tallest living thing in the world? It is the Coastal Redwood tree that grows along the Pacific coast in northern California. The tallest Coastal Redwood ever measured was 368 feet high. That is 68 feet longer that a football field, and 35 feet taller than a Saturn V rocket. Some of these giant trees are over 2000 years old. They were growing when Jesus Christ was upon the Earth. These giants of the forest start out from a tiny seed that weighs about eight-thousandth of an ounce. After three hundred years of growth, these trees will still be just "teenagers."

How can these trees grow so long? For one thing, this tree has a very efficient system of photosynthesis. This is the process of making food by the use of sunlight. The redwood tree can grow in an area where there is only 1% of sunlight. It can, therefore, practically grow in the dark.

The Coastal Redwood has an amazing water-pump system. This tree can pump 2,500 pounds of water each day from its roots to its leaves. This is equal to the energy required to throw a can of soda pop into an orbit around the earth. This pumping system amazes scientists. Who do you suppose designed it?

A famous poet, Joyce Kilmer, wrote a beautiful poem that contains some very good thoughts. You might want to learn this poem.

I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

 A tree that may in summer wear, A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree.
