Jehoiakim, Enemy of God's Word

by  Brad Bromling D.Min.

One of the most wicked men who ever lived in Bible times was Jehoiakim, king of Judah. He taxed his people heavily. He refused to pay them wages when they worked for him. He even killed preachers of God's word.

God told his prophet, Jeremiah, to write down His words in a book. Jeremiah told his servant, Baruch, to go to the house of God, and read the book before all the people.

When the king heard the words of the book, he took the book, cut it into pieces and threw it into the fireplace. But Jehoiakim could not destroy the words of God, for the Lord told Jeremiah to write the words down again in another book (Read Jeremiah 36).

Jehoiakim thought he would not have to listen and obey God's word, if he could destroy it and Jeremiah. Jeremiah did not have an easy life living for God. His life was in danger most of the time.

We can learn so much from this bad example. Though we may never cut the Bible up and throw it into a fire, we could refuse to accept its truths. But that would not be an honest thing to do. When we study God's Word, let's happily, honestly obey His wonderful words!
